“Someone told me music would save me, and it did.” ~ Aretha Franklin
Like many people globally, 2021 has been a year of ongoing lockdowns, locked-ins, and locked-outs. Some bits were terrible, and some bits were full of child-like wonder. I would not be putting too fine a point in it, to say creativity saved me. It seems surreal that it was only on the 14th of February, that I opened my tiny gallery (right before Auckland went into their biggest lockdown). Art@Rangitane has since become known as The Happy Gallery. And it’s not hard to see why. So many people have visited, left with beautiful uplifting works of art or vegetables from the garden. We’ve had dinner parties, champagne breakfasts without the breakfast (!) and launched new artists who are finding, as I do, joy through creative play.
Some of the best fun I have had is teaching other people to play too. Grownups who have become fearful, constricted, terrified of making mistakes. Like Julie, who shared, “I was feeling a little anxious during the session, not due to you, but my own insecurity about my ability to be creative.”
As children, we never felt that insecurity. It seems that adulthood instils insecurity within. This is why creativity and play can help us gain so much during these horridly divisive, fear-mongering times.
